Find a date using your 5G (video) iPod

November 17, 2005 @ 9:25AM - posted by Jacqui Cheng

As per the usual, only a month (or so) after the debut of the new 5G iPod that plays videos, entrepreneurs around the globe have swooped in to make a buck off of their old services in a new format to take advantage of early-adopting geeks. This time, it comes in the form of a new online dating service, PodDater.com!

PodDater is just what you might expect-a re-vamp of the old "video dating" services from the 80s and 90s (although I still see a few ads for them on late- night TV here & there) where you shoot a video of yourself and send it into the company, where they keep it on file and then send it out to various people who want to find a date and get to see you in full color & motion with voice and everything! Except, obviously, this time it's re-done to take the internet into account and the videos are formatted, you guessed it, just for your 5G iPod so you can take a bunch of potential dates around with you on your daily commute.

From PodDater's About page:

PodDater is the world's first dating/social networking site that brings together the growing popularity of the online dating space and the enormous success of the iPod. Visitors to PodDater can come to our community, become a member, identify potential matches and then download them to their iPods. All for free.

Imagine finding friendship and love on your iPod.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, PodDater will leave you speechless.

Isn't that sweet.

Much to even my surprise, PodDater is currently "FREE for all members." Because of this discovery, I decided to sign up and see how easy it was. Signup took only a couple of seconds and updating my profile went quickly-the site is nice and zippy. Unfortunately, I don't have any videos of myself so I can't upload one yet, but I'll try that later. They ask the standard questions that you would expect to be asked from any online dating site (height, "body type," ethnicity, gender, birth date, contact information which you can choose not to make public, etc.).

So, will PodDater succeed? Who knows. Maybe video dating combined with the Internets combined with iPods will make a winning combination. Or, maybe not...

Lonely? Go I-dating

What can't an iPod do?

Well, get you a date, for one thing.

Until now.

PodDater.com is using Apple Computer's lastest version of the iPod player to bring eligible singles together through the Internet.

The Web site, which launched earlier this week, allows users to post online video profiles that can be downloaded onto iPod video players via Apple's iTunes music store. IPod owners looking for a match can browse through entries and see streaming videos of prospective dates.

"If you look at a video profile over a static profile you can attach motion and sound," said Jon Myers, vice president of strategy for PodDater.com.

The site is promoting the portability of the service, which gives bachelors and bachelorettes with an iPod a chance to link up before they hook up. But it's the opportunity for dates to scope each other out in living color before meeting in real time that will attract traffic to the site, Myers said.

The service also works on other video MP3 players. Profiles can also be viewed directly at the site. The site is free and will mostly be driven through advertising revenue, Myers said.

So far PodDater.com has pulled in over 200 profiles and well over a thousand registered users. But like any club, the real challenge is getting the ladies on board. Street teams and special incentives are being created to bring young female audiences to the site, Myers said. PodDater.com can help iPod users get a date.

Ipod dating.

OK. We now have video iPod dating. Just like about a million other people, I just now received this new dating service via email. The woman on the video iPod says she's looking for a guy who is honest, genuine and authentic. She ends with "...So pod me." The world we live in. Don't you just love it? Ipod dating.

Video inspires launch of iPod dating site For years, people have showered their iPods with adoration. Now, through a newly launched iPod dating site, the music player might reciprocate some of that love. Columbus, Ohio-based PodDater launched a beta Wednesday of what it calls the world's first dating/social networking site that brings online dating to the iPod community, an idea fueled by the new video iPod.

The free service allows you to view user profiles, download video profiles to your iPod or any portable music player, and create and upload your own video profile. So far, there are 172 profiles up, but most don't have video yet. You can sort profiles by tags and enter your zip code for a match close in proximity. There's only one up so far in San Francisco or the vicinity. This is not the first iPod related dating site. Liam Burke, who wished PodDater luck on the site's blog, launched a podcast dating site, Podato.com, in February. Posted by Michelle Meyers

There's no loneliness like winter loneliness. But noisy bars, tired singles scenes and pathetic matchmaking attempts by friends and family rarely conjure up Prince Charming or Ms. Right. If you're on the hunt for a date -- or just looking to meet up with friendly folks -- a passel of entrepreneurs has been busy cooking up new ways for you to meet someone.

Use your iPod to see what's out there As iPods have evolved from being just music players, so have the uses for these ubiquitous little gadgets. And it didn't take long for someone to figure out a way to link iPods to dating. PodDater.com, launched just weeks ago, lets you craft a profile, search for matches and download them to any portable media player that plays the MP4 format.

While you also can browse for matches on PodDater.com, using an iPod with video capability will allow you to see short videos of potential dates without being tethered to your PC. "A video gives you more information to base a decision on," says Jon Myers, PodDater vice president of strategy. The service is free to members, and Myers says PodDater will be rolling out advertising that users will see as they're syncing member profiles to their iPods.

Tjänsten är helt gratis och låter användare söka efter potentiella dejter på hemsidan, där varje medlem har spelat in ett kort videoklipp med sig själv. It's also available to those who don't have portable media players but still want to watch members' videos through the Web site.

There's hope for all of us, yet, folks! Hear ye! Hear ye! If you're sat in your dingy bedsit, staring blankly at your playlist, wondering why that 300 buck, white, shiny bundle of joy has failed to encourage an entourage of beautiful women (..or men) to queue up at your door, then perhaps THIS will finally help that dream to come to fruition..(..don't quote me on this, though, I'll deny it..) PODDATER is a dating service brought right to your iPod! It allows you to upload profile information to a website database, including a video in iPod-format, which interested parties may then download and watch in total privacy on their iPods! A very cool concept, IMO, and one which will surely catch on. I think we're just seeing the very beginning of a whole range of services like this which will soon be offered to iPod owners. My only fear is that this may cause an alarming increase in the amount of white earbuds seen protruding from balding heads..

Video dating comes to the iPod

By Peter Cohen pcohen@maccentral.com

PodDater.com is a new service that combines the already established industry of Internet video dating with new portable video systems like Apple’s latest iPod. Subscribers can download potential matches to their device and take them with them on the road. The service, which officially launched Wednesday, is free to register and use.

Users who access the PodDater.com Web site can search profiles to find potential matches who interest them. Once matches are found, you can click on the Play link to watch the video in your browser, or download the video to your iPod. The next time you connect your iPod and sync it, the video is copied to your iPod.

PodDater.com co-founder David Hunegnaw said in a statement that several months ago, he and partner Roopan Dey saw the opportunity to bring Internet dating to portable video devices. “With the introduction of the iPod with video, we naturally jumped on the opportunity to leverage the technology and take dating on-the-go to a whole new extreme,” said Hunegnaw.

There's no loneliness like holiday loneliness. But noisy bars, tired singles scenes, and pathetic matchmaking attempts by friends and family rarely conjure up Prince Charming or Ms. Right. If you're still in the hunt for a date for New Year's Eve and beyond - or just looking to meet up with friendly folks - a passel of entrepreneurs has been busy cooking up new ways for you to meet someone.

Grapedates.com. Wine lovers don't have to make a Sideways-like odyssey through California to meet other oenophiles. Just log onto GrapeDates.com, which launched in January. Here, you're promised "a touch of sophistication," along with your search for the perfect someone. Despite the name, GrapeDates.com "is not just a dating site," says spokeswoman Ayelet Margolin. You can also get news about food and wine pairing parties, wine tastings, and other opportunities to meet others off-line.

If dating's on your mind, use the site's tools - My Vine List (to organize your contacts with other members), video profiles, cell phone alerts, and video chat to meet up. The site's free for now, Margolin says, while membership remains at fewer than 100,000 people.

ActforLove.org. If you're in a Blue State state of mind and you live in a Red State, it can get pretty lonely. To the rescue comes ActforLove.org, which "lets you take action while getting action," as its Web site says. Founder John Hlinko, who works as a Washington-based political consultant, says ActforLove, which launched in 2003, has signed up more than 20,000 members and was hopping just before the presidential election and again this fall, as debate heated up in the nation's capital over the Iraq war and the I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby indictment.

"People are passionate about politics. And it's only a short step to another type of passion," says Hlinko, who met his wife on Match.com while he was researching how to create a dating Web site.

It's free to post a profile on ActforLove; charges ranging from $10 to $30 a month kick in for additional services (such as being able to actually contact someone you'd like to demonstrate alongside at the White House). And if you're just looking for something to do, the site links to liberal causes and hosts a blog with announcements of fund-raisers and other events.

PodDater.com. As iPods have evolved from being just music players, so have the uses for these ubiquitous little gadgets. WeekendDating.com. Speed dating's nothing new. But Jay Rosensweig comes up with ways to make it intriguing. Piggybacked onto a New York Mets game, a Bon Jovi concert or a bowling match, his speed-dating sessions on WeekendDating.com offer something for most interests.

"I'm a bachelor myself," the New York resident says, and, when he decided to take a cooking class, he says he thought, "Why take it alone?"

At A la Carte Culinary in Lynbrook, N.Y., he divvied up attendees into three groups, each focusing on a different course. After they cooked the meal, the whole group ate together. "There are some people who are intimidated by traditional speed dating," Rosensweig says. "This eases them in." Future sessions include a defensive-driving class - "If you're going to be bored for six hours, you might as well make some friends" - set for late January that includes a bagel breakfast and pizza for lunch, and a CPR class. Prices vary, but many events are $30 to $50. Activities are grouped by age range. In some cases, the men's ages skew older than the women's.

Trick App: PodDater

Here is an interesting business model for the rapidly growing base of video iPods. Check out PodDater. You can search for your desired mate by using tags. Once you see a profile or profiles that your interested in, you can then download and sync them to your iPod and review at your leisure. The downloadable profiles are short video segments of individuals who tell you all about themselves. Good one.

PodDater: Meet your Date via your iPod

Peter Cohen over at Playlist has a nice write-up of PodDater, a matchmaker service via which you can download short videos of potential dates who match your profile. You can also upload your own profile if you like. PodDater even has their own blog for you to check out. One entry so far, but they ask us to be gentle, so we will be.

The FAQ says it's always free "for members" and they even offer a page of software for both PC and Mac to help convert your videos to an iPod compatible format and a list of date safe instructions so you can limit exposure to any weirdoes the service brings up.

Looking at their profiles page, you can tell they're a new service. Only four videos listed, and they're all guys. Married though I am, I did a search in my area just to see if anything would come up. Nothing. Then I did another search for "man looking for woman" with no location specified. Still nothing. "Man looking for a man" turns up two results. "Woman looking for a man" turned up four. So it looks like they only have 6 people and they are all dudes. Get in there ladies and break up that little sausage party!

IPod video helps singles connect

By Dan Caterinicchia

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

November 25, 2005

PodDater.com may have created a new online dating niche: online dating on the go.

About 300 people signed up for the free service in the first week after PodDater.com started Nov. 16, said Jon Myers, vice president of strategy. He said the Columbus, Ohio, company expects 50,000 subscribers within three months as new IPod owners try to maximize use of the devices.

PodDater.com is targeting young consumers who know what they want to watch, when they want to watch it, and sometimes create video themselves, Mr. Myers said.

"It's sexy," said David Evans, who has been editor of the Online Dating Insider blog since 2002. "You can look at [dating profile] videos on your IPod. If I was a twentysomething with a 40-minute train ride to work, I'd do it."

To sign up, potential daters create a short video about themselves, fill in profile information on PodDater.com, and put the video online using software on the site that converts it to the format read by video MP3 players, including Apple Computer Inc.'s new IPods that have 2.5-inch screens. The process takes about 10 minutes once the video is complete, Mr. Myers said.

Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., has not announced how many video IPods have been sold, but analysts are predicting strong holiday sales.

Mr. Myers said he hopes PodDater.com will be profitable within a year through syndication deals, which may include ads and would push profiles to potential matches based on their preferences.

"Right now, we're perfecting the technology itself to push it to the [ITunes Music] store," he said.

But Mr. Evans, 37, said that although PodDater.com's approach is unique, it may be limited by its narrow target audience.

"Video on IPods is interesting, but I'm not sure there's enough of a market of people to browse other people on their IPod versus a 17- or 19-inch [computer] monitor," he said. "They have to come up with ancillary services to make it worthwhile to go to the site."

Mr. Evans said PodDater.com could be successful if it evolves into a more modern version of the Ht or Not Web site (www.hotornot.com), which lets users rate the looks of others who have posted pictures and profiles on the site, as well as allowing them to post their own photos to be rated.

"It's eye candy, but it's totally addictive," Mr. Evans said, adding that it helps build "communities of interest" around the site.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, dating with the new video iPod will leave you speechless.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Let's face it. The dating scene is never easy and sometimes trying to find that "special someone" or even just a date doesn't exactly come easy, especially if you spend most of your time on the go. For this reason, online Internet database dating services have become increasingly popular for young professionals who are looking to find attractive potential dates instantly from the comfort of their own home or office. According to Jupiter Research, more than 17 million people viewed online personals last year and 2.5 million people have paid for online personals.

But even taking the time to read online profiles can be a bit time consuming and they don't always capture the true personality of the potential date like the prehistoric video dating once did. That's where PodDater.com (www.poddater.com) takes dating on-the-go one step further.

The venture, started by David Hunegnaw and Roopan Dey, brings the success of Internet Dating to any video MP3 player, including the new iPod with video. PodDater.com allows members to find love (or friendship) by downloading potential matches to their portable player and check them out on the go.

With over 21 million iPods sold, the iPod is easily the world's most popular digital music player and now the newest editions with video -- the possibilities of adding a new avenue to dating in the city are endless. "Several months ago we identified an opportunity to bring Internet dating to portable devices like the iPod," says Hunegnaw. "With the introduction of the iPod with video, we naturally jumped on the opportunity to leverage the technology and take dating on- the-go to a whole new extreme."

PodDater, the first video dating service of its kind, allows members to see a person's true personality rather than guessing from just an instant message or e-mail. "While Internet dating allows you to chat with people and 'get to know' them, seeing how someone comes across on video is another way to find people who you feel fit the criteria you are looking for without sitting in front of a computer screen," adds Dey. Imagine sitting on the train, bus or waiting in line for your morning coffee and having the ability to search for that evening's date or your future soul mate. It's possible with PodDater.com.

About PodDater

PodDater is the world's first dating/social networking site that brings together the growing popularity of the online dating space and the enormous success of the iPod. Visitors to PodDater can come to our community, become a member, identify potential matches and then download them to their iPods via the iTunes music service.

Additionally, PodDaters can more quickly establish contact with like-minded people through the site's use of tags. Tags are freely chosen keywords that are hyperlinked and used to identify potential matches. All for free.
